Hey friends and happy new year! 2020 is in full swing and I thought I should do a small blog update with my 2019 reflections and 2020 plans. Come along and join this journey with me!
There were a lot of changes for me in 2019 although I did not see it at that time. First off, I got a new job at the beginning of the year and it was the first time in a long time that I've returned to a corporate setting, although this time as a creative designer. Despite the somewhat glamorous idea of a job I suppose, working in the main business and rather tourist-y district in a first-world country, it also held a lot of challenges and I don't think I've cried so much about a job as this one lol!
2019 was also when I brought out my first pin design into the world. It was based on Holly Black's Cruel Prince series and it became quite popular a few months after its release.
Unfortunately, I am no longer selling this design as Holly Black has partnered with TopatoCo to release official merchandise, and has expressed wishes that non-official merchandise no longer be sold.
Last year was also the year I fell in love with designing and selling enamel pins. And with that came a huge learning curve! I do say that I thoroughly enjoyed the process though, and I'm so glad I ventured into this product line. I hope to continue bringing beautiful and unique pin designs that will make you happy.
With the sudden upsurge in sales and demand came the realization of what I really wanted to do with my life. I wanted to work on this business full-time. I wanted to share my art with the world and through that art, make people's day a little better. Every word of encouragement or happy comments, DMs, and messages I got from people who bought my products and loved it made me want to pursue this avenue more and more. After all, what's the point of life if I'm not living it with love and passion?
So with that, in 2020 I'm resolving to do several things to improve my life and my business.
First off, I have a new logo and business card for 2020! I love the results despite the logo on my business card, which was silver shimmer when I assumed it was going to be pink shimmer. (I don't know why I even thought that tbh lol, I suppose I just misread!) It still looks great though, I think!
Check out how I redesigned my logo in the video below:
I've also created new backing cards for my pins and necklaces that I am really excited to use once my old backing cards run out. The cards match my business card and they make me so happy!
In 2020 I will also be transitioning into more eco-friendly packaging. I know that most waste is created by the big, multinational businesses, but even as a small shop I want to follow in the footsteps of those more eco-conscious small shops and contribute what I can. Caring for the environment is a responsibility all of us carry, from the biggest of corporations to the smallest of businesses.
I'll also be working more on what works for my shop and slowing down on what doesn't work so much.
Unfortunately, bookish stickers did not work so well, so I will be focusing less on producing those.
On the upside, enamel pins have been my bestsellers! So I will continue designing more enamel pins. I will also begin to produce some bookish enamel jewelry, such as my Six of Crows necklace below.
Next in line to turn into a necklace will be my Mr. Kindly pin design! So watch out for that, I do plan on releasing it early this year.
Aside from that I'm making an attempt to be more active on my other social media such as Twitter and YouTube, and maybe explore more social media such as Tumblr or TikTok? Let me know what you think of those channels!
I want to also release new products! I've already released my first batch of magnetic bookmarks featuring the Six of Crows gang with artwork by Crika117, and I plan to release my Aurora Rising magnetic bookmarks during the month of January too.
I'm also looking into producing some washi tape! I am mildly obsessed with washi tape (I have to show you my washi tape collection soon lmao) and I do want to someday see my own designs on one!
In terms of personal life, 2020 is a big year for me too. Specifically in the areas of romantic relationship life. My boyfriend and I are planning to get married in November of 2020! It's exciting to think of but also a bit anxiety-inducing, mainly because of all the planning we have to do. But I'm excited to start a new life and family with my soulmate.
2019 End of the Year Reads
Since I'm a bookish shop I think it's appropriate to also talk about book things lol! So here's me talking about some books I'm reading or have read from the end of last year:
King of Scars - It took a while for me to finish this and I don't know if it's because it was super long or because I can't get myself to be fully invested in the book. It felt so disjointed and Nina kind of just seemed irrelevant to the main plot so far (even if I genuinely enjoyed Nina's chapters the most lol). Also it's strange that Nikolai felt like just a secondary character in a book that's supposed to be about Nikolai... I hope book two will be more cohesive!
Spin the Dawn - Currently reading still but it's enjoyable enough and it never grows boring! The writing style is so-so but I do love the plot and the pacing is nice. Will write an update on my thoughts when I finish the book!
The Starless Sea - Erin Morgenstern's writing style is as beautiful as I remembered from the Night Circus. I know beautiful seems like an unspecific way to describe her writing but if you've read a book from her you will know what I mean. She manages to come up with the most intriguing, dreamlike scenes and describe them in magical, fantastic detail. Still also currently reading but I already feel like this is going to be one of my favorite reads of the year!
What are you reading right now? Let me know what you think of it!
